Types of Mobile OS

There are different types of Mobile operating System. They are:

1.Symbian
2.Android
3.Maemo
4.Bada

5. IOS
SYMBIAN
Symbian is an open source operating system (OS) and software platform designed for smartphones and currently maintained by Nokia. The symbian OS is divided into:
* Series 40 – This is used in some of the Mid-Range Nokia mobiles. This series does not support Multi-tasking and has support for Java.
* Series 60 – This is used in the Nokia Multimedia smartphones such as Nokia N-Series and in some other new mobiles. This series has a support for Multi-Tasking.
There have been four major releases of S60: “Series 60″ (2001), “Series 60 Second Edition” (2003), “S60 3rd Edition” (2005) and “S60 5th Edition” (2008).
* Series 80 – This series is developed mainly for Nokia Communicator Mobiles and currently Nokia havent released mobiles with S80 platform.
* Series 90 – Nokia discontinued S90 platform and merged it with S60 platform.
The latest release in symbian platform is the Symbian^3 OS. It was designed to be a more ‘next generation’ smartphone platform. The Symbian^3 release introduced new features like a new 2D and 3D graphics architecture, UI improvements, and support for external displays via HDMI.
ANDROID
Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android’s mobile operating system is based on a modified version of the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android’s development and release. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. The Android operating system is the world’s best-selling Smartphone platform.
Android has a large community of developers writing applications (“apps“) that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 150,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.
The latest release of Android is the Android 2.3 code-named Gingerbread for the samrt phones andAndroid 3.0 code-named Honeycomb for Tablets.
MEAMO
Maemo is a software platform developed by Nokia for smartphones and Internet tablets. It is based on the Debian Linux distribution. The platform comprises the Maemo operating system and the Maemo SDK.
Maemo is mostly based on open source code, and has been developed by Maemo Devices within Nokia in collaboration with many open source projects such as the Linux kernel, Debian, and GNOME. Maemo is based on Debian GNU/Linux and draws much of its GUI, frameworks, and libraries from the GNOME project. It uses the Matchbox window manager, and the GTK-based Hildon as its GUI and application framework.
BADA
Bada is a mobile operating system being developed by Samsung Electronics for use on mobile phones and low-end smartphones.
It is designed to cover the range from lower-end feature phones to high-end smartphones. Samsung claims that Bada will rapidly replace its proprietary feature phone platform, effectively converting feature phones to smartphones

IOS

An “Operating System” is the system that all other programs “Operate in”.   An iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad is really a portable computer.  An “App” is really a computer program.
The operation system on a PC is “Windows”.  The operating system on a Mac is “Mac OS X”.  The operating system is what you see after you turn on a computer for the first time, but before you install any programs.
The OS in iOS stands for Operating System.  Thus iOS is the base software that allows all other apps to run on an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
Some operating systems include games or utilities.  For example Windows comes with Solitaire and iOS devices come with programs to play music and video.
